Why Isn’t Anyone Visiting My Website
You have just built your new website and paid the developer a nice sum of money. You sit back waiting for the business leads to start rolling in, but it’s been months now and nothing is happening. You ask yourself: Why isn’t anyone visiting my website.
This is one of the most common things we get asked about at DNA Web Development. We thought we would write a blog about what we think are the top 5 reasons why no one is visiting your website.
1 Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Most of the issues we see all point back to bad SEO. If any SEO even exists at all in some cases. Some of the basic things like search engine submission and making sure the correct pages are indexed just never happen or even get set up. If Google doesn’t know that your website exists how can they show your pages in search results? Yes, it is true that Google will eventually find your website but why wait for what could take months.
2 Content
Did you write your own website content? Did your developer write it or did you pay a professional copywriter? It really doesn’t matter who wrote it as long as they know what Google is looking for to successfully rank a page on the search results. Simple basic page structure is often overlooked. Another issue and personal “pet peeve” of mine is keyword stuffing (also don’t get me started on developers who still use meta keywords). Writing content that makes no sense but has your keyword in it 30 times will no longer get you anywhere with Google.
3 Design
What if your site is ranking well but people still aren’t visiting? Maybe your overall site design is driving people away? What is your “Bounce Rate”? If your developer doesn’t even know what that is, it might be time to find a new developer who has more experience with SEO and Analytics. Can people navigate your site easily to find the information they are looking for? Did your developer conduct any user testing? The easier you make it for visitors to your website to find what they are looking for the longer they will spend on your website.
4 Website Speed
How quickly does your site load on a pc? On a tablet or a phone? Site speed is factored by Google in where it displays your page in search results. Did your developer optimize images used on your website? Images often are the cause of a slow website speed. Has your website been properly cached? Setting up a cache for certain parts of website can speed it as well.
5 Social Media
You don’t have time for Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. I bet your target audience does. Depending on who you are targeting, your potential website audience use at least one of these platforms daily. Not using the right platform can be a problem as well, there is no point in putting a lot of time and effort into Facebook if your target audience is using Snapchat for example. Creating different types of posts and sending people to your website is one of the main goals and will improve your local ranking and visibility.
Ultimately Google wants to send the people searching to what it thinks is the best possible website to find the information they are looking for.
At the end of the day this blog is just a drop in the ocean as to the reasons why people aren’t visiting your site but it’s something to get you thinking. It’s also something you should be talking about with your developer or potential new one.
DNA Web Development offer a free Website Audit where we will look at the above issues and many more and try to work out why people aren’t visiting your website. We will then come up with a plan to fix and improve your site and put in place a long term SEO strategy.
