Website Audit: Vapelover
Video transcription
Hi, it’s Dave from DNA Web Development and I am the SEO Development Manager at DNA and a big part of what I do is auditing websites. So auditing websites involves looking at things such as the way sites are set up, how pages are set up, what the UX the user experience is like and most importantly what the SEO is like. So what I am going to show you is some of the issues we identified on the front end of this website, the front end is basically what you see on your screen.
So I wrote a blog a few weeks back where we had a client with very similar issues to the website we are looking at today so this time I thought I would make a quick video to show you some of the things that we find when we are auditing a website.
Today we are looking at vapelover.com.au which Is an ecommerce website that sells e-cigarettes, accessories and vape juices and they are located at Regency Plaza up at Sefton Park. So the owner contacted us as his website is about 2 years old and he has not gotten any orders through the website in this time.
He had originally built his own ecommerce website where he was getting sales, and then he had a new site built for him and since than he hasn’t had any orders. So there are numerous SEO issues on this website and I won’t bore you with all of them but some of the major issues are that the site has no proper headings set up and the site lacks any real content and as we all know google loves content.
So if we look at new vapes for example which is set up as a blog type page, there is no content at all on this page. So if we look at a product we can see there is a heading but there is no content to tell you the user what this is and importantly to tell google what this is. So if we go back to the products, batteries. We can see that the products have been set up in a widget, what we call a widget rather than a default grid set up on the page. So in our UX testing we found that most users are going to want to scroll up and down on a page which is the traditional you could say is the traditional method rather than scrolling across.
So one of the biggest problems we found on this website is through the mobile usability. Before I show you that though I’ll show you some statistics. There was no tracking set up on the website so we only have data for the last 2 weeks which is when we set the tracking up. So as you can see in the last 2 weeks we have had 35 clicks from google search results, 18 of those have been from desktop devices and 17 have been from mobile devices, so roughly we have a 50 50 split of devices accessing the website. Keep these statistics in mind.
When we look at the website from a desktop point of view, we hover the mouse over products and this drop down opens up and we can click into whatever category we want and then we can click on the products. If we were to look at this through a mobile point of view and in this case we are emulating a Samsung galaxy s5. When you try and access the products you can’t get the drop down menu to show up and just clicking on products doesn’t take you anywhere. So just to double check that this isn’t just an android issue we double check and in this case we are emulating an iPhone 6 so we go to the menu and the products and nothing happens. So basically, the menu hasn’t been set up right from the start, for a user to access the products from any mobile device.
So if we think about those statistics we were just looking at. Potentially this website could have had nearly a 1000 visits to it from mobile devices and none of those people have been able to access products which is defeating the purpose of having an ecommerce website because that is basically what it is built for.
From a developer point of view the way people consume websites now is shifting to mobile devices. So when we are designing and developing websites we now design from a mobile point of view which is exactly what google wants and is now ranking for.
