How long should my blog be
We were talking about his question the other day and thought that it would make a good blog post because it’s actually one of the hardest questions to give an answer to. If you asked 100 blog authors - How long should my blog be? you would get 100 different wide ranging answers because what works for one person might not necessarily work for you.
We are not going to give you answer 101 and tell you that a blog post needs to be exactly 361 words and paragraphs can have no more than 5 sentences or anything like that. We are going to tell you about the things we think you need to consider when writing your blog.
Firstly, the most important thing you need to consider is who are you writing the blog for? Who is your audience? How in-depth does your post need to be? Those questions alone open up a whole new can of worms. That’s why we recommend a blended approach of blog writing. Sometimes a quick 200-300 word blog is exactly what’s needed, it gives the reader a quick read and something to think about with the hopes that they might comment and share your blog. On the other hand, sometimes you may need to explain something “in-depth” so a longer 800-1200 word blog is needed.
The next thing we would recommend to do would be to analyse what people are reading. Look at your Google Analytics and see what blogs are the most popular, look at how long people are spending reading the blogs. For example, there is no point writing 1200 word blogs if not many people are reading them, if you do have a long blog you want to write maybe consider breaking it down into a 2 or 3 part series.
So how long should my blog be? I personally recommend it should be as long as it needs to be to get your point across for that specific blog. If you can get your point across in 150 words that’s ok, if it takes you 2000 words that’s ok as well, just take into consideration what your readers like and if it’s too long break it down into what they prefer.
